George North is second with 47 tries. Gareth Thomas, a Cardiff Blues centre who also captained Wales 21 times, is third on 40. Ieuan Evans, a Llanelli winger who also captained Wales, follows on 33.
How Did Shane Williams Set the Record?
Shane Williams's stunning form established him as the undisputed king of the tackle-break and clinical finisher. In March 2008, he registered his pivotal milestone. He broke the try-scoring record in Wales's 29-12 win over France in Cardiff, which completed the 2008 Grand Slam, taking his tally to 41.
Evans, Thomas and George North are linked with Wales records, but it is Williams whose impact on international play is framed by Wales's greatest test runs. His playing style remains vivid: a sudden side-step and change of pace before blowing past defenders.
He was named IRB (World Rugby) International Player of the Year for 2008. That season, he scored six tries during Wales's Grand Slam campaign.
His 87th and final cap came in an 18-24 defeat by Australia in December 2011, in which he scored his 58th and final try with the game's last play.
George North's international career, from his 2010 debut to his retirement from Wales duty in 2024, leaves him second. But Evans, from the Welsh squad of 1987, also remains seven tries behind Thomas's tally.
